Building a Culture of Growth: Learning Walks at LOMS
At Lone Oak Middle School, we believe that great educators never stop learning. Our teachers are committed to continuous growth, collaboration, and fostering the best possible learning environment for our students. To support this mission, LOMS has introduced Learning Walks—a professional learning initiative that allows teachers to observe, reflect, and learn from one another in a non-evaluative, supportive setting.
What Are Learning Walks?
Learning Walks are short, informal classroom visits where teachers step into each other’s classrooms to observe effective instructional strategies in action. The focus isn’t on evaluation—it’s on learning, collaboration, and celebrating the exceptional teaching happening across our campus.
By participating in Learning Walks, teachers:
Gain insight into diverse teaching strategies.
Strengthen their own instructional techniques.
Build a culture of shared learning and support.
Reflect on best practices that positively impact student engagement and achievement.
Learning in Action
One of the first Learning Walks was completed by Mrs. Hinson, who visited Mr. Brennan's 6th grade history class. Here’s what she had to say:
"I had the privilege of sitting in Mr. Brennan's 6th-grade history class this past week. You can feel his love for history as soon as you walk into the room. His energy is apparent and engaging. Students are uninhibited when it comes to asking thought-provoking questions; and in turn, Mr. Brennan is ready with an answer. He is unafraid of bringing the past to the present and making it relevant, regardless of its realities. I thoroughly enjoyed the visit! Well done, Mr. Brennan!"
This kind of collaboration and professional reflection is exactly what Learning Walks are all about—teachers learning from teachers, growing together, and elevating student learning.
A huge thank you to our LOMS teachers for their dedication to their students and their willingness to learn, grow, and inspire each other every day!
